The Maclaren Four Seasons stroller has got design appeal by the bucketload. If pushchairs were judged by their looks alone, the Maclaren Four Seasons would have gotten full marks instantly. That would mean that we can't write this review though. Fortunately, there is much more to the this Maclaren than its beauty.
At the top end of the market in terms of the price you’d expect to pay for a stroller, with a retail price of £225, the Maclaren Four Seasons gives you all the extras you’d expect, and then some, coming with three reversible seat liners - spring, summer and autumn - and one beatifully soft and cosy footmuff for winter. This effectively means that you can quickly and easily change the look of the pram, whatever the mood or season.
When you take the stroller out of the box, it’s already fitted with the tan seat it comes with, and you simply select which of the liners you’d like to use that day, and simply velcro it into place, slipping the standard Maclaren 5-point harness through the slots to secure into place. It really is as easy as it sounds, et voila - a whole new pram is born!
All of the liners, including the standard tan seat on the frame, are completely washable, and the tan sunshade/hood is also water resistant. The seat has four recline positions, which are operated by lifting a lever either side of the pram, and gently pushing the pram into the recline position of your choice. To place the seat back in the upright position, you just push it from behind and it clicks into place.
Apart from the aforementioned reversible liners and cosy footmuff, the Maclaren also comes with UV sunshade hood, rain cover, and the most delightful grey and red suede blanket. It even comes with a stylish and very roomy carry/storage bag, complete with luggage tag - for when you take the stroller on holiday - which doubles as a handy storage bag for all the extra liners which aren’t in use.
The Four Seasons also has the infamous Maclaren 5 second, one-handed fold - and this feature is no gimmick. With the stroller in the fully upright position, you simply use your foot to lift the tab at the bottom, and then push down on the lever on the side. Fold the pushchair onto itself, and it locks into position. You can even do this without having to remove the cosy footmuff first. And weighing just about 15lbs, you can do all this holding baby in your other arm and lift with the handy carry strap.
Anyone who’s already pushed a lightweight stroller will know that, compared to a pram travel system, they feel the terrain a bit more. Your baby will generally be closer to the ground, and you just don’t get the suspension that you come to expect with some of the bigger-wheeled pram models. That said, if you've used a Maclaren before, you will find babies sleep perfectly well in them.
Taking the Maclaren out and about is a pleasure. It is light, nimble and can spin on a sixpence, letting you nip in and out of crowds with no bother at all. The shopping basket isn’t useful for much more than a small handbag, a few toys and a water bottle, but the hood has a handy pocket on the back of the pram - together with a transparent viewing window to keep an eye on baby. The handle bar isn’t adjustable, but it is comfortable for the hand.
